A truly great nature photograph captures the image that visually shows the beauty and majesty of the moment it was taken in the natural world. Light is the greatest teacher. How it plays with the physical surfaces of objects – be it light on a mountain in the distance after a storm or on a flower petal – is the lesson a nature photographer must learn and focus on in order to take a great picture. If the picture is taken without consideration to the existing light, the photograph won’t be good. A good photographer pays attention to the light, not just when taking a picture, but even when the camera is put away. A good photographer is always aware if there is a good picture as he or she looks at a landscape.
As a photographic diplomat for the earth, I feel a great responsibility to instill in those people who don’t get into Nature who she truly is through those images.
